What tools do you need to start a YouTube channel for your business?

One of the most common questions, "What's the best camera to use for any situation?" I'll tell you about a simple lighting technique that originated in the 1600s with the Dutch masters. Then, jump back to the 21st century and let's talk editing programs. And then let's go over something cool to have and something you can't have enough of.

With that said, here a short but comprehensive list of the basic tools you'll need to start a YouTube channel for your business today! 👊

1. What camera should you use for any given situation?

Well, the quick and simple answer is the one you have.

There's probably going to be one within arm's reach. If you're in a pinch and you need to do something, grab that one.

Chances are it's in your pocket.

You've got it right there on your smartphone. These smartphones have just blown up over the last few years. And now the big race, the big competition between manufacturers is who can come up with the first pocket-held 42 gigabyte 6,482,535-pixel camera?

I'm telling you, these things are getting absolutely insane.

And they're able to do so much more that, honestly, the big race is who's going to produce the very first feature Hollywood film on a smartphone.

Trust me, the race is on and a lot of people are waiting for that quality to hit so they can just jump in.

You can also use a webcam in a pinch if you want to. A lot of the webcams have a very limited capability because the web has a limited capability.

They're not going into 4K. They're not going into 8K. They're not doing that high. Zoom meetings, 1080p at best, but you want a really, really good quality.

Preferably something with, I mean, like I said, your smartphone is probably shooting in 4K. Just make sure, double-check your settings and inch that bad boy up there.

The other thing you could go for is a DSLR, the good old-fashioned camera. And I call that a good old-fashioned camera. I'm just talking about the shape. You got the lens on the front. You got the body back here. Chances are you're going to look at it like this, a good old-fashioned DSLR.

Now, there's no such thing as an old-fashioned DSLR. And in fact, they're coming forward by leaps and bounds. Now we've gone into mirrorless. Mirrorless is a little expensive, but I'm telling you, the technology is going to take over.

And of course, with great technology comes much more affordable prices in the long run. Feel free to start saving your nickels for a DSLR or a mirrorless.

Do not hesitate to start making content because you have that camera in your pocket right now.

There's no excuse.

Get started today.

2. What will you need for lighting?

For lighting, you can do something very simple with lighting by sitting in front of a window, going outside, sitting underneath a tree.

Or if you want, you can even accomplish a fantastic lighting effect that dates back to the 1600s, to the Dutch master painters.

They call it Rembrandt lighting or the Rembrandt effect.

Rembrandt Lighting

Now, if you look, you can see the light is coming from his right side.

The light is casting shadows on the left side of his face, and it creates a little upside down triangle of light on his left cheek.

That was the signature Rembrandt look. And you can do that simply with one light. You can probably recreate this look with a lamp sitting on the end table in the living room right now, preferably a three way.

Let's crank it up a little bit.

And again, I get back to my basic tenant: If you're waiting to order lighting, that's not an excuse.

Get started. There are plenty of other alternatives.

But if you want to invest in one light, start doing your research, start doing your studying and set up a Rembrandt lighting effect.

3. Video Editing Software

You've done all your content. You've recorded all, but I'm sure there are a couple of mistakes or some flubs.

There are tons of software options out there, anything from free that's probably, again, on your cell phone, it's probably already on your smartphone and very compatible with the camera.

Or if you want to step it up to a free program on your computer, you can.

There's plenty that chances are your Mac or your PC already come with some. There's one preloaded on there. And then there are others you can download.

There are tons of other programs that have an entry level price. Some of them are one-time payment.

For example, let's say DaVinci Resolve Studio. The studio version costs $295. It's one-time purchase only and you're done.

There's also a free version of DaVinci Resolve, which is quickly becoming a Hollywood standard.

It hasn't quite taken over the industry, but they're looking at it. So that's the type of quality you're looking at when it comes to an editing program for free.

There are just a couple of bells and whistles that you don't use, but you know what? For what you'll be doing, you're not going to need those particular bells and whistles.

So DaVinci Resolve regular or the DaVinci Resolve Studio for a one time fee.

Then there are some others like Adobe Premiere Pro. That comes with a monthly subscription.

Granted, it's a little less expensive than $295, but at say between $29 and $59 for a bundle of some kind, it starts to add up over time.

Now the good thing about specifically, let's say Adobe Premiere Pro, it plays very well with Adobe Audition. That is their audio program.

And if you want to really have amazing audio and amazing video, something like that where the two are compatible is something to really consider.

DaVinci Resolve also does that. They've completely and totally redone everything. And now they've got this robust audio suite that's built into the program.

And you just flip back and forth between video and audio and make the adjustments you want.

So anything from free to already in your pocket, all the way up to a monthly subscription or maybe a one time fee.

There's plenty of video editing software out there to choose from.

What Else Do You Need?

I'm blasting through this a lot of information, very compact, very surface level. If there is something you need me to take a deep dive on, let me know in the comments below. Is there something specific that you're interested in? I can talk about that for you. I want to help you out and just make the comment below and I'll do just that for you.

4. Microphones and audio

Now granted, just about every single camera is going to have a microphone built into it.

You're probably going to pick up a lot of room noise with that. In my particular setup, I even have a small shotgun mic mounted on top of the camera. That helps.

There's still a very roominess and echo, slight echo flavor to it.

The best thing you can do, especially when it comes to audio for video, is have at least one, if not two separate backups.

You can have one on your camera. That's great for syncing purposes.

You can have a lavalier microphone clipped to your shirt for really clear recordings.

And then slightly out of the camera shot is actually a third microphone off screen that's picking up, it's directly pointed at me. So it's not going to have a lot of room noise to it, but it is a backup.

So there's a backup to the backup to the recording.

You cannot go wrong with too many audio sources. Just keep that in mind.

It will turn around and bite you at some point.

I hate to say it.

5. External monitor

It's also very strange when you're sitting here talking to this little black rectangle with a little black circle and you really can't see what's going on, especially if you're filming by yourself.

  1. How do you know you got the shot right?

  2. How do you know you're looking at the right thing?

  3. And are you even in the shot?

Because if you're like slightly off and you want to move things over, well, you can do that in post, but that takes up more time and more effort.

And the whole thing is being able to do this quickly and simply.

So, get an external monitor.

A lot of these DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have an HDMI out, which means you can literally plug it into a 55-inch screen TV if you want to.

Now, I wouldn't suggest that, but it's a lot of fun when you do!!

Something small and mounted on a tripod will work just fine. The little tiny screen that's on the camera, you know, flips out of the back.

That little monitor can be hard to read, but something a little bit bigger certainly comes in handy in framing your shot and making sure that you're in focus, making sure the lights are right.

I've got one light at my studio that likes to go out on me. I can see that right there in the monitor. An external monitor really helps.

6. Two things you cannot have enough of

Number one, batteries.

Something's going to run off a battery and you need to make sure that it keeps running while you're filming.

Please, please, please have enough batteries.

What kinds do you need? Are they double A, triple A?

I was doing some filming earlier that required my wireless keyboard and mouse. I need double A's and triple A's for the keyboard and the mouse.

Just make sure they're within reach.

And then the one thing you can never have enough of because one of those guys is going to go south on you and that's: cables.

If you've got wires running for microphones or wires running for lights, there's going to be a cable to suddenly freak out on you and start giving you a bunch of static and sparking and stuff like that in your audio.

Please be sure to have at least two or three, whatever you need, have some backups for you because they will go bad on you.

7. One resource to jumpstart it all

One other thing I would be remiss if I didn't say there's a great way to get all of this started.

I was able to secure a bunch of these books for you. And I would suggest you grab one.

A Hero's Guide to Influence on YouTube

It's written by a friend of mine, Nate Woodbury. And the title is "A Hero's Guide to Influence on YouTube."

If you are thinking about getting on YouTube, this is going to be the new business YouTube channel book Bible.

Click this link and order a copy for yourself now.

It is not an affiliate link. I'm not making any money off of this.

Nate has given me some to give away. You cover shipping and printing. And I mean, the printing is beyond worth it. How often do you get a full color book describing everything you need to do to get your YouTube channel up and running?

This is going to be your new tome. This is going to be the one that you're going to carry with you wherever you go. And it will never, never leave your side.

Get yours today.
